About us

Only about 5 to 11% of all farm holdings in Sierra Leone are run by farmers under 30 – and persuading more young people especially young ladies to begin farming is a significant challenge.
Faced with an ageing farming population, Rugiatu Favour Kanu Founder and CEO of Slay Farmer is stepping up her efforts to encourage young people regardless of their work of life to engage in farming. Young farmers are given the opportunity to join the Slay Farmers Network. I provide best farm practice management to young farmers and also benefit from additional training.

Supporting the next generation of young farmers not only enhances the future competitiveness of Sierra Leone agriculture; it also helps guarantee food supplies for years to come.

Our Mission

Our mission is to break societal barriers and empower young women to embrace farming as a sustainable and rewarding career option. We aim to equip them with the necessary skills, knowledge, and resources to succeed in the agricultural industry, regardless of their stature in society.

About Our Founder and the Slay Farmer Brand

An Agriculture graduate from Njala University and A Certificate holder in SMEs Business Management from the Institute Of Public Administration and Management in collaboration with the Netherlands Business Council SL. Rugiatu Favour Kanu works with farmers across the country and owns 10-acre farmland of a variety of fruits and vegetables and grains.

The name Slay Farmer is about enlightening young ladies that farming is not about age or financial status. Slay Farmer serves as a beacon of hope to young people, providing a platform where young people especially young ladies can be motivated to be part of the future of agriculture.

The key message to young ladies is that you can be a farmer regardless of your stature in society. YES, you can slay on a farm too.

"The actual meaning of SLAY has been misunderstood by social media in a negative image. SLAY means to be "exceptionally or greatly impress or amuse (someone) in what you do". I was a professional Extension Agent and a researcher before now. However, travel to the Ivory Coast where I met a PhD. holder in his farm working hard like any other regular farmer – inspired me of owning my own farm and I also took the initiative to encourage other younger ladies to embrace farming."

"I've worked with the Produce Monitoring Board in Kambia as a Quality Control Officer and later transfer to Portloko as a district Quality Control Coordinator. I am presently at the Headquarters of the Produce Monitoring Board as a Quality Control Coordinator.

I am a Trained and certified Sensory Evaluator of Cocoa from the Centre of promotion of imports from developing countries in the Netherlands.

I am also trained by International Trade Centre – ICT on cooperative governance gaining knowledge on how to set up, manage and run a farmer cooperative successful. I've completed a 3 days training course with GIZ on vegetable production, preservation and marketing and gained extensive knowledge on vegetables and how they're to be handled with care.

I am currently pursuing ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) and IEC (the International Electrotechnical Commission) ISO/IEC17020 – Conformity Assessment, which is a journey towards Sierra Leone to be a globally accredited and accepted Inspection Body provided by UNIDO."
